Tribute To Ebira Women

Elsewhere, their contributions to human development not only in terms of the household are invaluable and emblazoned in gold. They occupy very important positions in all spheres of human endeavour. In recognition of those invaluable contributions, holidays are declared in their honour, streets, festivals and institutions are named after them. Cultures that fail to properly harness their power suffer irredeemably as a consequence.Nationally, giant strides are being made towards empowering them and towards the utilisation of their immense talent. However, there are still obstacles in pockets of geographical locations notably in northern Nigeria where women are victims of the purdah, the practise of segregation, seclusion and confinement. Ebira might be islamising very rapidly, safe for a minority radical fringe, we are not about to put barrier between the genders and confine our women behind the curtains. Having said that, there is still very much to be desired in terms of empowering wo

Ebira Movies: the stories and the makers

Ebiras, like in other arts, are talented in movie making. Started as short dramas by the Ebira theatre groups including Amedari Theatre Group, Okene (ATGO), Omeduta Theatre Group, Okene (OTGO), The Ajozes and others, the effort has gone beyond local plays to modern film making. Championed by Atilla Videos, Ebira artistes excelled in the business of local entertainment characterised by high sense of humour. While many observed that most of the movies are comedy oriented, others feel that the stories tell more than just 'fun'. Today, Ebira movies, now mostly produced by Calabash Film Production, Okene, have become famous and highly patronised both in the state and nation-wide. Anthonia Ajavara, a.k.a Ohunene (a celebrated Ebira Actress) FULL DETAIL COMING SOON. Readers' Comment

Send silence to the dust-bin

I am Yeesuf M. Uhuanamoh. When i saw Ebira on net, through this site, i was so much trilled that i quictly joined the website some time late last year. I want to say that you are all doing a big, good job! Please keep the flag flying and never listen to any form of opposion or discouragement. Hosting Ebira as a tribe and Anebira as a people on net had pictured us as a social, educated and advanced group of peolple. With regards to your letter in my mail-box, sent to me on Friday, 12th of January 2007, it is completely true that we have not being receiving dividend of democracy in our land just because many of our enlightened people have not agitated positively at the federal government level. There is not crime in asking. It think the task in our hand right now is to know that Nigeria is ours and therefore, we should put keeping silence into dustbin and reach out for what we should enjoy both nationally and at state level. Permit me also to use this medium to say that we should look in

Okunchi Community: when the water runs dry

The local people of Okunchi face the harshest experience of water scarcity. Throughout the year, the locals had to either fetch from the river in the rainy season or climb the mountains to the rocky cliffs, beating through the thicket for possible 'fetch' of few buckets of water in the dry season. EbiraView arrived okunchi through Idichegede at about 8:30am on the 5th of January, 2007. A child was met in a home as he received treatment from a sudden attack of diarrhoea after his few days of arriving home from Lagos for the Sallah festival. Upon request for water, our team was shocked to see a brownish looking liquid served in a cup. This is the type of water the people of Okunchi drink. They vote. They have representatives in the local and state government but they are not properly represented. Just like in every other part of Ebiraland, water as a necessity of life has always been neglected. No government in Ebira has so far thought of solution to this problem that threatens t

Anebira celebrate Eche Sallah Obanyi (Eid -ul-Kabir) and New Year, 2007

It began with the arrival of the city people; those who have been away to the urban areas. It was an occassion many won't like to miss as Ebiras trooped home to celebrate yet another Eid (sallah festival) which coincided with the New year, 2007. From the 22nd of December 2006, Ebiraland began witnessing heavy traffic jams in such areas as okene and Ogaminana. It wasn't immediately clear whether the New year would bring people home as many have complained of the ecomonic situation of the country. Those who expected a low turn-out were disappointed as people arrived from different part of the country and beyond to celebrate sallah and New Year. The Bariki (Okene main) market was flooded with people shopping for the festival. Food stuffs, Clothings and Rams enjoyed huge turn overs. As the harmattan wind blew over the town, Ebiras struggled through the market to get their items ahead of the looming inflation. While traders cpent more hours at their shops, the Tailors and dress-make
