CONDEMNATION OF VIOLENT KILLING OF POLICE OFFICERS AND A CALL TO STOP THE POLICE DEHUMANIZING ACTS IN OKENE

CONDEMNATION OF VIOLENT KILLING OF POLICE OFFICERS AND A CALL TO STOP THE DEHUMANIZING ACTS METED OUT TO INNOCENT CITIZENS BY THE POLICE IN OKENE LGA AND ENVIRONS

The Ebira Unity Progressive Forum wish to condemn the killing of two police officers by unknown gunmen in Okene and also wish to condemn and protest in her strongest terms the unending harassment of innocent Ebira citizens by the Police as seen in the numerous arrests, intimidation and punishments carried out by the Police on the 31st of July 2015 in "retaliation" for their slain colleagues.

The Police who ought to be the enforcers of law and order, now take pleasure in breaking them. They went on a shooting spree, causing fear and unrest in the minds of people especially the elderly and crippling the economy of the town. People are forced to remain indoors, shops are closed or half opened, the market place is empty and the brave walk cautiously to avoid arrest. The protectors of lives and properties are fast becoming the destroyers and EUPF is totally against this ugly trend.

Agreed, the killing of serving police officers on duty is a serious crime and as a people who overcame a similar scenario in the killing of two soldiers in August 2012 by unknown gunmen and other similar killings in the past, we are appealing that this wickedness must stop immediately.

We are appealing to the Commissioner of Police to call his men to order with immediate effect and restore sanity back to our communities. Justice can only prevail through proper investigations and interrogation of REAL suspects, as such we are calling for the immediate release of all who were unjustly arrested and tagged suspects in the incidence of July 31st.

This is also a wake up call to our leaders to intervene now and to do the needful in putting an end to this season of police vengeance. The big question begging for answer(s) is, where were the police officers in the police command adjacent to the crime scene when the killing took place?

The Commissioner of police as matter of urgency must caution his men especially the "police crack team" in Okene to step up their game and discharge their duties more professionally. It was a crime committed by unidentified criminals. They were not killed in combat because the town wasn't in a state of crisis when the unknown gunmen struck and shot dead the policemen attached to first bank.

This continuous unprofessional attitude of some triggerhappy policemen in Okene should be discouraged because it will only add gas to the already burning fire.

Our paramount ruler, Ohinoyi of Ebiraland, HRM. (Dr)Ado Ibrahim and our political leaders should not only condemn these actions (on the police and innocent citizens) but also do something urgently to forestall a reoccurrence of these violent and dehumanizing acts.

May the souls of the slain policemen rest in peace and may all those who have been unjustly treated in this regrettable incidence be comforted.

Thank you.

The case of Ahmed Awela, Murtala (Eti Bobo) among other Ebira youths

Ismail M. Kabir, Lagos. Between controversial existence and a contentious exit. There are various sides to a story. For an event that happens with few or no significant eye witness, the news come in different versions; some partially correct, others completely cooked up. In some cases, such non-witnessed event pass round as rumour until eventually confirmed. Rumour it was, when a phone call from Okene announced the death of two famous Ebira youths! They were killed by the Police, reported the news. Being on a Sunday when nothing too special should ensue save for the usual church services and social functions, the news sounded as the most unexpected, as a matter of fact, incredible! The thought of losing such youths on an ordinary day like Sunday undoubtedly was the reason for the astonishment. Not a single person of Ebira origin, within or outside the soil would believe such shocker upon first hearing. Text messages, phone calls and of course physical enquiries lingered, all in an atte

The Obege legend

In the earliest generations when the art of magic was yet a myth to the people, there was born a boy into a family of hunters in the village of Eika - one of the six communities that comprised the ancestral groups. He was believed to have been born with a leaf in his hand and to the elders of then, that was prognostic of what he would be - a native healer. And had grown up performing wonders. His kinsmen were all hunters, they would deny the boy the opportunity to follow them hunting, purely on age ground - and he was really too young to go hunting in the forest. They would leave him in the house with the women as they set out on their hunting expedition. But they had meet the young Obege in the forest roasting a fair member of the forest’s game, all alone - and unarmed! The elders had to defer to this wonderful boy. Obege as an adult was more than human. His fame had spread all over the land: he was a healer of most seemingly incurable diseases, he was a rain maker, assumed more divin
