EHI NITE

In its attempt to promoting Ebira culture and encouraging Ebira artistes to withstand the challenges of our time, EHI Cultural Promoter (ECP) organised EHI NITE on Saturday 27th May (Children day) 2006.

The event was held at the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) club, Ikeja, Lagos. The turnout was remarkable as the event witnessed the presence of eminent Ebira personalities in Lagos and beyond. Guest artistes were:
- Saka Ozi Okasime (Oseke)
- Adebayo Ozi Itopa (Decker)

It was an occassion that reminded one of the richness of Ebira culture which was admired in the past by Ebira neighbouring communities. With the success recorded from the event, Ebira is surely regaining its lost glory as its culture and traditions get honoured by both Anebira and the outside world.

Ekuechi Festival Of Ebiraland

ORIGIN OF THE FESTIVAL There are few accounts of how the festival started. However, the differences inthese accounts are not fundamental. Generally, Ireba Eku (masquerade cult) wasbelieved to have been formed under the divine instruction of God to check the excesses of women, apart from serving as ancestor worship. Sketch History of Ebira (Itopa Ebira)

ORIGIN OF THE EBIRAS An elder beats the Agidibo to salute the spirits (Photo by EbiraView) Ebira Tao is the largest of the several Ebira groups found in about 8 states of Nigeria including the Federal Capital Teritory (FCT). The other sister groups are Egbura Koto and Ebira Mozum (Kogi state), Ebira Panda, Ebira Oje/Toto (Nassarawa state), Ebira Etuno (Edo state), Ebira Agatu (Benue state) Ebira Oloko (Ondo/Oyo/Osun states). Written records about the origin of the Ebira people were those compiled from palace sources by the British colonial administrators in early 20th century. The Ebira, through oral tradition, trace their descent to Wukari (in the present Taraba state) where they were a constituent part of the Kwararafa confederation.
