Eku performs the Ebira dance step

While leaving Okene for Iloring in the final leg of our recent tour, I came across this entertaining Eku (Masquerade) and was impressed by its methodology. Ogedembe, a controversially named Ebira Masquerade (Eku) specialises in the art of 'Pay per dance' around Okunchi area of Ogaminana, Adavi LG of Kogi state. Ebiras, like in other arts, are talented in movie making. Started as short dramas by the Ebira theatre groups including Amedari Theatre Group, Okene (ATGO), Omeduta Theatre Group, Okene (OTGO), The Ajozes and others, the effort has gone beyond local plays to modern film making. Championed by Atilla Videos, Ebira artistes excelled in the business of local entertainment characterised by high sense of humour. While many observed that most of the movies are comedy oriented, others feel that the stories tell more than just 'fun'. Today, Ebira movies, now mostly produced by Calabash Film Production, Okene, have become famous and highly patronised both in the state and nation-wide.
