Sanusi Ohiare and the new Ebira Civilization

By Haruspice ( Photos by EbiraView ) In my voyage of hustles, I found myself last Monday in a place called Upake- a habitat inhabited by the Ebiras in Ajaokuta Local Government Area of Kogi State. I was there on the invitation of the Rural Electrification Agency to anchor the commissioning of the first Rural Electrification Fund (REF) Minigrid based on Public Private Partnership at Upake Village in Ajaokuta LGA, Kogi State.  2, 879 people in Upake and more in the neighbouring Obangede community in Ajaokuta now powered with clean, safe and reliable energy. Upake is the first of 12 communities on the first call of the Rural Electrification Fund (REF). Upake community is believed to be the ancestral town of the Ebiras- the beginning of all Ebira civilisations started from this place. Years of total neglect has however rendered this cradle of civilisation of the Ebira speaking people as the forgotten capital of the world. When you are searching for what true poverty looks like, Upake is cr

Bello Adoke, Living A Purpose-Driven Life

By Abdulkarim Adubi Abdulmalik As published by Greenbadge Reporters (September 3, 2014) .... On Monday, September 1st, Nigeria’s Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Mr. Mohammed Bello Adoke (SAN), turned 51. His associates had wanted to give him a Birthday bash but he quietly turned it down. Last year, he did the same thing. Bello Adoke, SAN This is an irony; considering the fact that in this part of the world, praise-singing is an art, a very good art. The average man of immense financial or political influence is an emperor. He likes to be seen and praised by his benefactors just as he likes to shout from the roof tops; after all, in marketing, if you do not say “here I am, nobody says there you are.” But Adoke had always taken an exception to this since his youth. I could recall that when in June, 1979, we completed our secondary education and were busy packing our baggage, he came from his hostel, Clark House, to my room in Oduduwa House and sai

Celebrating first year anniversary of OziOgumahi

By Ismail M. Kabir To many, the name Christy Chapman always rings a bell. Yes! She is closer to her community than many home-based individuals with whom she shares similar capacity. U.S based Chief Christy Chapman has been a source of benevolence to multitudes of the down trodden members of her immediate community and the Ebira society at large. Her life is characterized by philanthropic works devoid of discrimination. She considers every Ebira youth her own child, offering them support in all facet of life. Chief Christy Chapman has, besides other silent gestures, contributed to the educational development of Orphans, the youths and empowered widows among other numerous contributions to the well being of the less privileged. Worthy of mention is the donation of her house in Agassa that eventually became the first set of classrooms to an Orphanage school founded by Shehu Beida in Agassa Okene. Today, the school has attracted the intervention of World Bank. Chief Christy is loved b

13 Years on the Throne: EXAMPLARY LIFE OF THE OHINOYI OF EBIRALAND, HRM ALH (DR.) ADO IBRAHIM (CON)

His Royal Majesty Alh. Dr. Ado Ibrahim was born on Thursday 7th February, 1929 to HRH Alh. Ibrahim Onoruoiza Atta and Hajiya Hauwawu Ozianuva. He is one of the 148 children of his late father and an only child of his Mother. HRM Ado Ibrahim had a priviledged birth, and a disciplined upbringing with its emphasis on the work ethic. His father, according to him, gave his children educatiom, the glory of work and high integrity. This disciplined upbringing with its emphasis on the work ethic ensured that, rather than lapse into a scriptive explotation of the fact of their priviliged birth, the children will strive to achieve excellence in different vocations to meet the demands of a changing social structure. His enlightened father was a widely travelled traditional ruler of his time. By the late 1920s, he had toured West Africa, ZEurope, and Asia. He was a devout Muslim, nonetheless, he believed that the Northern Nigeria of his day needed both Quranic and Western Education.

As Bishop Haruna passes on ....

Background of the Man Herbert Bishop Haruna was born in 1924 at Okene, a town in Kogi state (then Kabba Province). His father was polygamous and therefore Mrs. Elizabeth Ibegu Haruna (mother of Bishop Haruna), was one of many wives in Yakubu family. Two interesting thing about this family are that; 1.it is a royal family and stood for all that Ebira arristocracy had to offer; the other two arms of the family tree being of course the Atta and Ochunu Onukoko forming the big royal family that produced Bishop Haruna 2. Papa Yakubu being a muslim accepted the tennets of Islam with regards to marriage and therefore warmly and willingly embraced polygamy but the point of interest here is that Herbert broke away from this strict family tradition to become a christian. This gives crdence to the saying 'ce sera sera' (whatever will be will be). One can see the rationale behind why the Herbert of later years, zealously held on to views he strongly believed in. From contemporary experience

So far, he has documented over 700 Ebira names beginning with letter 'A' and particularly researched the mistery sorrounding the nobility and significance of the letter 'O' in Ebira language generally. Siyaka Oyibo delivering a lection on 'Re-orientation of Ebira youths' at the launch of EbiraView foundation in Lagos According to him, 'letter 'O' is unique in Ebira. Great Ebira legends, ancestors, masquerades and more, have there names starting with letter 'O' as in the case with Ohomorihi, Ori
