Senator Salilu Otaru Ohize has called on the federal government to declare the Niger Delta region and Ajaokuta Steel Complex as national emergencies.
He said: "It is only by so doing, that the realities of the stark poverty of the people, whose natural endowments help to create wealth upon which the nation depends, can get optimum benefit for nature's blessings."
While commending the Senate President, David Mark, for his initiative that took the senators into the Niger Delta for on-the-spot assessment of problems in the area, he, however, noted, "my people are suffering from a similar fate," adding that such a visit was also necessary for other mineral producing areas of the country.
The radical lawmaker, who was hosting the press in his constituency in Kogi State, said the press event was necessary as a reminder for President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua to implement his current budgetary proposal on the Niger Delta.
Senator Ohize, representing Kogi central constituency, also called on the federal government to "show serious commitment to any timetable it has drawn for addressing the seemingly intractable problems of the Niger Delta people." The senator also compared Kogi State's problem to that of the Niger Delta, saying natural endowments of a people should not cause the people pains.
The fiery senator, who is a stalwart of the Action Congress, made the call as he presented what he called an impartial view on the plight of the Niger Delta to a group of opinion leaders from his constituency at a briefing session he organised in his constituency office in Okene over the weekend.
Senator Ohize said: "I was appalled by the squalor I saw and one must genuinely be bitter that a huge chunk of the resources for this country comes from that squalid place. The people deserve something better. The government (the executive and the legislature) must hold themselves accountable for any more delays in starting off execution of the plans to remedy these people's situation." read more >>>
