The vice chairman of senate committee on Niger Delta, Senator Nuradeen Abatemi Usman has said that the long abandoned Ekuku Dam project has been enlisted in the 2012 budget of the federal republic of Nigeria for its revitalization.
The Kogi central district senator made the declaration in his office during a meeting with the coordinators of Ebira Youths for Progressive Change Initiative (EYPCI) at the National Assembly. He said that the provision of portable water to the people of the central senatorial district of Kogi state forms a significant part of his legislative agenda as declared in his campaign promises.
Senator Abatemi who applauded the objectives of EYPCI emphasized his commitment to delivering the expectations of the electorates while analysing the efforts he has made towards ensuring adequate discharge of his primary responsiblities to his people just as he has delegated a capable team to attend to 'peculiarities' arising from what he described as secondary issues through his community based NGO, The Umajene Abatemi Initiative (TUAI).
According to him, TUAI whose board was recently inaugurated with a take off fund of over N20 Million is tasked with the responsibility of addressing community based demands and related advocacies to allow for better concentration on his primary legislative assignment.
"The understanding of this our office varies from person to person. I feel very honoured with the job I am given to do and I love doing my job. There's huge expectation back home but I want to assure you that we are working hard to deliver on our priorities", he said.
The senator went down memory lane to highlight some of the steps so far taken to properly address the challenges facing the people of Ebira land. He recalled his visits to some of the abandoned projects in Ebira land including the Ajaokuta steel project, Itakpe Iron Ore Mining Project, Osara Dam, Ekuku Dam and Okene water works.
While analyzing, the erudite senator explained that while Osara Dam is the largest water source in Ebiraland, Ekuku Dam being the second largest could supply portable water to all the major parts of Ebiraland, stressing that his focus is to deliver this expectation in a larger scale. He said he has met and discussed with the Ministry of Water resources to this effect.
"I won't go sinking bore-holes in every household in Ebiraland but I am committed to an urban approach towards allieviating water scarcity in Kogi Central". He, however, declared that Ekuku Dam is already included in the 2012 budget for implementation.
"With the inclusion of Ekuku Dam project in 2012 budget, as long as I remain in this office and as long as I am alive, once the project is fully executed, I can go back after four years and say that I have contributed to the community". Speaking further, Sen. Abatemi disclaimed the insinuation that Ajaokuta Steel Project is not realizable.
"If there are people that believe that Ajaokuta steel project is not doable, I am not one of them. I believe the project is doable and a lot is already happening in that direction".
