ERG Press Release: Ebira deplorable socio-economic situation



 The political class in Ebiraland has been called upon to evolve a development agenda that will address the deplorable socio-economic situation of the Central Senatorial District of the State. This call is contained in a statement by Hajia Ladi Ibrahim who was speaker at an interactive meeting of the Ebira Renaissance Group (ERG) with political leaders of Ebiraland held at the Civic Centre, Obangede over the weekend.
Hajia Ladi Ibrahim who represented the Central Senatorial District at the recently concluded National Conference also called on the people of the district to evolve a political programme that will address the right of representation of the minorities in order for peace to reign in the Senatorial District.
Earlier in a welcome address, the Coordinator of the ERG, organizers of the political meeting, Pastor Suleiman Joseph called on the Kogi State Government to convoke a state conference to discuss how the various ethnic nationalities in Kogi State can work together to move the state forward.
Pastor Manjoe lamented the dwindling number of civil servants of Ebira extraction in the service of Kogi State and other “pitiable” condition of Ebiras in the State.
According to him, there is need for a renaissance of the people to address the widespread social ills confronting the Ebira society which include idleness, greed, drug abuse, high profile assassination and parasitism.
Various speakers who contributed to the interactive meeting include Chief J.O. Omuya, Alh. A.O. Salami, Hon. A.K. Salihu, Alh. S.I. Bello, Ambassador M.K. Ibrahim, Hon. Hassan Yusuf – Okehi LGA Chairman and Hon. Yahaya Karaku amongst others.
The occasion was chaired by Alh. I. Ademoh of Club 10 Nigeria.

The Obege legend

In the earliest generations when the art of magic was yet a myth to the people, there was born a boy into a family of hunters in the village of Eika - one of the six communities that comprised the ancestral groups. He was believed to have been born with a leaf in his hand and to the elders of then, that was prognostic of what he would be - a native healer. And had grown up performing wonders. His kinsmen were all hunters, they would deny the boy the opportunity to follow them hunting, purely on age ground - and he was really too young to go hunting in the forest. Obege as an adult was more than human. His fame had spread all over the land: he was a healer of most seemingly incurable diseases, he was a rain maker, assumed more divin
