Common sense
demands that when you visit someone or a community, you are to comport yourself
in a way and manner that will not anger or provoke your host.
The above has also
been supported by the saying that, “if you are in Rome, you should behave like the Romans.”
However vague that
old saying might look, one can easily deduce from it that a visitor in a
community should behave in accordance with the practice of his or her host.
Recent happenings
in Ebiraland has shown our Igbo visitor’s attitude is completely antithetical
to that above wise saying, as they have been acting as if they can do and undo
in Ebiraland without any consequence.
Funny enough, our
Igbo settlers have recently been using the police to gag and intimidate their
host (Ebira sons and Daughters) over flimsy complains.
At the mid of last
Month, within one week over five of our sons and daughters were arrested by the
police over trivialities, and investigation has revealed that such arrest were
made at the instance of our Igbo settlers.
Some of our boys
were arrested over little and inconsequential argument and the police have been
feeding fat on our people.
Have we done any
wrong by accepting and accommodating the Igobs in Ebiraland? The answer is
blowing in the wind.
It is instructive
to note that, this is a dangerous trend that could boomerang if not checked
now. Such senseless and unprovoked arrest by the police at the instance of our
Igbo settlers must stop now.
We are using this
medium to call on the Igbo President or Chairman in Ebiraland to call his
people to order now. He should also give them tutorials on how to relate with
their host.
We are also
calling on the Ohinoyi of Ebiraland and the local government chairman in
Ebiraland to collectively talk to the police to stop harassing and arresting
our people over unnecessary complains.
