Onyayi Senabu Usman is the age long 'Face of EbiraView' whose elegant pose in Ebira traditional attire has graced the pages of EbiraView media since the year 2007. At 80 years,  inya Senebu is aging gracefully in the company of children and grandchildren. Tracing the location and family of this woman since we adopted her photograph as the Face of Ebiraview has been a wild goose chase for almost a decade until we met her grand daughter recently. Dr. Salamat Ahuoiza Aliu is a neurosurgeon at National Hospital, Abuja. She is the first indigenous trained female neurosurgeon in Nigeria is also the first female to be certified a neurosurgeon in West Africa. Dr. Aliu is an indigene of Okenne Local Government Area of Kogi State but was born in Ilorin, Kwara State, where she had most of her education up to the university level. She found the area of neurosurgery interesting and intriguing, and then decided to specialize in the discipline. When an opportunity opened up for her at the Neurosurgery Centre in Sokoto state, she went ahead to train in spite of discouragements and difficulties. The training, which takes about six years to get certified, if there no unforeseen circumstances during the training period, tested both her capacity to handle the pressures of the job as well as managing her job with other family responsibilities. Since she got certified, she has mentored other four women who are also training as neurosurgeons- tw...

Appeal court reinstate sacked Kogi council chairmen

An Appellate Court sitting in Abuja has orderd the immediate reinstatement of sacked council chairmen and councillors in Kogi State. The chairmen and councillors headed to the court after the councils were dissolved through an order of a High Court in Kogi State. Ruling on the case earlier today, the Appeal Court ordered the immediate reinstatement of the council officers to complete their legitimate term of three years. Some of the Chairmen who spoke to Vanguard expressed joy at the judgement and hailed it as victory for democracy. The case which was instituted against the State Government over the constitution of the State Independent Electoral Commission by the APC led to the sack of the council helmsmen. Kogi State Government had challenged the judgement to ensure the reinstatement of the council chairmen and with the ruling of the appeal court, the APC may decide to appeal the ruling at the supreme court.

Group threatens court action against Kogi gov election

By Kingsley Fanwo (Vanguard news) LOKOJA—The possibility of Kogi State governorship election holding has been threatened by the determination of FairWin, a political advocacy group, to challenge the legal propriety of the former INEC board to set the timetable for Kogi and Bayelsa polls. Vanguard scooped that it was necessary to clear all legal hurdles leading to the election to give the recently constituted board the opportunity of organising governorship polls in the two states to avoid legal tussle. It would be recalled that last week, a respected constitutional lawyer in the country, Mr Femi Falana, SAN, had raised an alarm over the legality of the previous board to take any decision concerning the two elections, in view of the fact that they could not form a quorum. INEC had only 3 federal commissioners until Wednesday when President Muhammadu Buhari appointed a new chairman and other commissioners for the commission. However, FairWin said there was need to test the...

Ebira And Her Identity

By Onuru-oyiza M. Sanusi I noticed that people were consoling a crying colleague of mine, for she was rubbed. Where? Okene! My home town! Every one turned to look at me. “Are you from that wicked place?” cold sweat came over me. My mouth opened, no word. Times you hear news about Ebira on NTA, printed media or verbal it is disgusting, very shameful. Few people started to calm me; I did not know I was shedding tears. I did not shed tears for the rubbed woman but, my land. Okene is definitely not the only place where rubbery is committed but, it is certainly the only place where brothers kill themselves for no just cause. A place where political crisis reigns for years yet no political position. It is a land where it is either killing for clannish differences or over nothing. What answers do we give when another ethnic groups ask why the killing and burning in our land always? I do not know whether those at home know the shame and challenges we outside the land always fa...

IGALA’S ANNEXATION OF AJAOKUTA: A UTOPIAN IDEAL

By: Buhari Omolori Sani Buhari Omolori Sani If anything took the Ebiras by surprise more than anything else, it is the claim of the Igalas that Ajaokuta belongs to them, and the inclusion of the area as part of the Okura State they are currently agitating for. Whatever the challenges that the Ajaokuta issues has posed to our communities, it is very essential for us to go down memory lane for the purpose of awareness, posterity and most importantly for the preservation of a peaceful co-existence in Kogi state. History has it that the first settlers saw the bird (Aja) perching (oku) on their newly braided cottages (uta) and therefore coined the word “Aja-oku-uta (Aja perched on cottage) as the name of the land.   These are all Ebira words.

Soldiers invade Inike area of Okene

As more gunshot is heard from the area, residents are reported to have remained indoor with little or no movement across the entire Inike and Idoji areas of Okene. A source who preferred anonymity told us that the incidence may not be unconnected to the recent attack on DSS hqtrs in Lokoja when some suspected Boko Haram inmates escaped. It is alleged that some of the escaped suspects are hiding in that area . In Idoji, residents are seen gathered in small numbers around their homes unsure of the unfolding incident as more gunshots are heard from the distant. More update soon.

A chieftain of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kogi State, Senator Nurudeen Abatemi-Usman, has hailed the list of ministerial nominees sent by President Muhammadu Buhari to the Senate for screening and confirmation. Speaking through his media assistant, Michael Jegede, in a statement issued in Abuja, Abatemi-Usman said the ministerial list contains names of eminent Nigerians, who have proven track records of achievements in the various positions they have held previously. Hear him: “I think the first batch of the ministerial list as sent by President Muhammadu Buhari to the Senate for screening and confirmation is okay. I am personally satisfied with the names on the list because I see them all as people who have the capacity to deliver based on their performances in the previous positions they occupied. They are distinguished Nigerians of sound character and unflinching courage with vast experience in the way government is being run. They are people who possess some rare qua...

TRIBUNAL UPHOLDS OHIARE’S ELECTORAL VICTORY

The National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Lokoja on Monday 12.10.2015 at 3.40pm upheld the election of Senator (Dr.) Mohammed Salami Ohiare in the March 28 2015 Kogi Central Senatorial Elections. In a Unanimous Judgement read by the tribunal chairman Justice Akon Ikpeme, the tribunal dismissed Honorable Ahmed Ogembe’s petition challenging the return of Ohiare as the duly elected Senator for lack of merit. Reacting to the Judgement, Senator Ohiare said: ‘’Once again, the Judiciary has proved beyond any reasonable doubts that it is truly independent, and has remained the last hope of the common man in this country. The Judiciary has reaffirmed that the good people of Kogi Central freely and overwhelmingly voted for me and my great party APC, and no one can steal that mandate through the back door”. He went down memory lane to the days when as a young civil servant in the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), he was victimized and dismisse...

Labour Party as Clear Alternative Needed to rule Kogi State.

The Labour Party in Kogi State received with shock the statement creditted to the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress APC in Kogi State, Alhaji Hadi Ametuo  stating the readiness of the party's flag bearer in the coming governorship election in Kogi State Prince Abubakar Audu, to refund the Eleven Billion Naira he allegedly stole from the coffers of Kogi State, which throws the state into state of disrepair and poverty ridden for which he is being tried by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC now. If such party is voted for, the first task will be to deep hand inside state covers again and also towards the end still mismanage the lean pocket in the state. We were shock because a party which prides itself as change agents could attempt to once again cajole our people into voting a candidate whose only legacy while he once had opportunity of governing the state was huge debts and mismanagement of the commonwealth of our people.  We must say we are grateful t...
