The annals of Kogi Central's history are marred by tales of violence, fear, and uncertainty. During the era of past governments before the administration of Yahaya Bello, the region witnessed some of its darkest days. Political thuggery, extrajudicial killings, and wanton destruction of properties were rampant.
The mere sound of gunshots would send communities into hiding, with homes becoming prisons and survival depending on the whims of those in power. Our youths, particularly the "boiz," would vanish into the night at the slightest hint of police presence, leaving innocent civilians to bear the brunt of the violence. The infamous police raids, where young men were rounded up and shipped off to Lokoja to suffer behind bars, are still etched in our collective memory.
The politics of that era was characterised by a culture of impunity, where those who orchestrated violence were often tipped off and allowed to escape, while the innocent were left to face the music. This created a sense of hopelessness and despair among the citizenry, who felt abandoned by the very authorities meant to protect them. The situation was further exacerbated by the lack of access to basic necessities like food, as shops remained closed and markets were deserted due to fear of violence.
However, with the advent of Governor Yahaya Bello's administration, a new dawn broke for Kogi State. His commitment to peace and unity has been a beacon of hope, transforming the state's landscape and fostering an environment where citizens can live without fear. Under his watch, his politics of unity has not only brought people together but also laid the foundation for a dependable successor, ensuring continuity and progress.
Governor Bello's leadership style, characterised by inclusivity and empathy, was instrumental in healing past wounds and building a cohesive society for the Ebira people. Even after his tenure, he continues to be a unifying force, bringing together diverse groups and fostering a sense of belonging among all citizens. His governance was a testament to his commitment to the welfare and progress of the Ebira people and Kogi State at large.
In appraising Governor Yahaya Bello's leadership, one could aptly describe him as a visionary leader, a peace architect, and a champion of unity. His legacy will undoubtedly be remembered for generations to come as a testament to his commitment to the welfare and progress of the Ebira people. As the "Prophet of the Ebira people," Bello's leadership has been a blessing to Kogi State, and his impact will be felt for years to come.
As we move forward, it is essential for all stakeholders, including political leaders misleading Sen. Natasha, to embrace the path of unity and progress that former Governor Yahaya Bello has charted for the Ebira people. The past days of violence and fear should serve as a reminder of the importance of peace and stability. Let us work together to build on the foundations laid by FGYB, ensuring that our collective efforts propel the Ebira people and Kogi State towards a brighter future.
As we appreciate Yahaya Bello's contributions, we must also recognise the importance of embracing unity and rejecting the politics of division evident currently in our region. Together, we can build a prosperous future for all under the guidance of our visionary leader, Alh. Yahaya Bello, that Young Man from Agassa.
